Let me set the scene.
It’s finally the weekend.
You’ve been looking forward to this moment all week. No rushing through homeschool lessons, no juggling snacks, diapers, and the million tiny responsibilities that come with motherhood.
You tell yourself, “This weekend I’m going to rest.”
You even imagine it for a moment:
A warm cup of coffee.
A quiet house.
Maybe sitting down for longer than five minutes without someone calling your name.
And then your toddler wakes up.
The Reality of “Rest” With a Toddler
Rest looks a little different when you have a toddler in the house.
It might look like sitting on the couch while your toddler climbs on you like a jungle gym.
It might look like drinking your coffee reheated for the third time while someone asks for a snack they asked for two minutes ago.
Or maybe it’s laying down for “just a minute”… only to hear tiny footsteps running down the hallway followed by:
“Mama?”
And suddenly rest is over.
The Five Minute Mom Break
If we’re being honest, moms of toddlers measure rest a little differently.
Rest might be:
Five quiet minutes in the bathroom (with the door locked).
Folding laundry while listening to a podcast instead of answering questions for two minutes.
It’s not exactly the spa day version of rest we imagine… but sometimes those small moments feel like gold.
Why Rest Still Matters
Even though rest looks different in this season, it still matters.
Motherhood—especially with little ones—is constant. It’s beautiful, chaotic, exhausting, and full of moments where you’re giving everything you have.
And if we’re not careful, we start believing that we have to keep going without ever pausing.
But the truth is, moms need rest too.
Not just physical rest, but the kind that reminds you that you’re allowed to slow down—even if it’s just for a moment.
The Kind of Rest Moms Actually Get
The funny thing is, many moms eventually redefine what rest means.
Rest becomes:
Sitting on the couch while the kids play nearby.
Laughing at the chaos instead of trying to control it.
Letting the laundry wait until tomorrow.
It’s less about perfect quiet… and more about letting go of the pressure to do everything all the time.
Because sometimes the most realistic kind of rest in motherhood is simply giving yourself permission to pause.
Even if your toddler is still climbing on you.
A Little Encouragement for the Mom in This Season
If you’re in the toddler stage right now and wondering when real rest comes back…
You’re not alone.
This season is loud, messy, and often exhausting—but it’s also filled with moments you’ll one day look back on and miss.
Sticky hands reaching for you.
Tiny voices saying “Mama.”
Little feet running through the house.
It’s a lot. And it’s okay to admit that.
